- <p> DIED. Albert Pierrepoint, 87, Britain's best-known hangman,
- who dispatched 433 men and 17 women in a 25-year career; in
- Southport, England. Pierrepoint, whose father and uncle were
- public executioners, hanged World War II traitor William Joyce,
- known as Lord Haw Haw, and Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed
- in Britain. He defended the noose as humane and quick (11 sec.
- when done properly), but when he retired in 1956 (soon after
- Ellis' hanging) he became a vigorous opponent of capital
- punishment.
